Police said a 10-year-old Burlington, Iowa boy was accidentally killed when he was hit by a falling tree.
Garrett Brockway’s dad was using a mini-excavator to remove a dead tree in the 11000 block of Starrs Cave Road just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday, February 24, 2013.
When the dead tree fell, it knocked over a second tree and that tree knocked over a third tree, which struck Garrett.
Garrett was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. He did not survive his injuries.
In an update released February 28, 2013, a statement from the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Department said Garrett’s death was ruled an accident.
